I was a young American Airhostess living in TAchikawa from 1969-1971 with several other american girls. We remember Tachi of those days. It is so awesome to see this vision of TAchi. We are considering a return trip to visit our home away from home when we were young girls. Should we come to Japan for this?
Christy,
Thank you for your coments.
Tachikawa changed drastically after the re-development of Tachikawa station about 5 years ago. They have not only JR railway system but another railway system now.
Prior to that, they built new Tachikawa station about 20 years ago.
Either way, it has been changed quite bit since 60's. Fussa station has been changed as well. Bur I would say some of the scenery around Yokota air base might have not been changed.
Yes, if you have memories, I would reccomend you to come to see this area with your old firends.
It is not far a way these days.
Christy:
I was stationed at Tachikawa Air Base from August 1960 until September 1962. I found Tachi to be a very exciting place and I enjoyed my stay very much.
From pictures I have seen on he Internet, Tachikawa has changed dramatically. It appears to be quite the modern city with an expanded population.
Great photos. We visited Christmas 2006 and really enjoyed the area. Really loved Lumine store at station mall area.
I was stationed at Yokota Air Base from 72-74 as a Medic but lived just off base outside of Tachikawa air base in a modest Japanese built home. I remember the local little eateries, soba dishes and an underground bar no too far from home that had a terrific blind solo guitarist. I used to drive from Tachi to Yokota to work. It was a miracle that I learned the routes through the narrow streets. I traveled all throughout the area and had a wonderful time during my stay there. The Yen was 360 to the dollar!
Keith,
Thank you for your comments.
I remember when 1 dollar was 360 yen. It was also fixed exchange rate, wasn't it?
There are many more houses and building between Yokota and Tachikawa area now.
You will be surprised how much these are changed.
But I believe some of the buildings in the air base have not changed for a while.
Hello:
I was stationed at Tachikawa AFB for 30 months (1952-54) and again for 48 months (1958-1961 with assignment to the base hospital on the FEAMCOM side.
I enjoyed the pictures on your site but still find it hard to believe that your pictures and those I have from my tours came from the same part of the world. Thank you for an entertaining evening from an old, really old vet.

Questioning Christy.....who did you
fly for? I lived there and was with
Airlift. I am still in touch with my
pal Janet SIMMS.
cherie
i was stationed at "Tachi" from 1968 to 1970 working for the 20th CFS at the time. Spent most of my time as a medic driving ambusses with vietnam casualties between Tachi and Yokota. We worked very hard and also partied hard during that time. Made a lot of great friends and had a lot of memories. Funny thing though, you hear a lot about other units but basically nothing or very little about the 20th CSF. Just he same, it was a great place to work and had a lot of comradery. Believe it or not, I still have the original unit patch.
I was a flight attendant for Airlift International, and yes, I remember Janet Simms and Cherie Austin.
You girls must contact me. Chattye, Krit, and Kathy Olyniece and I went back to Toyko, and took the train to Tachi about 3 years ago. We burned some ashes in memory of Monica. Cheri, please contact me, at ***@*** if you see this.
The Hiro I thought I was connecting with was an agent for Eddie Arab in Tokyo, who I was commissioned with in the late 60-s and early 70's.

I WAS A WAF STATIONED AT TACHI HOSPITAL FROM OCT 1968 TO OCT 1970 WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO REMEMBERS WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME IT WAS.
If anyone would like to see hundreds of tachi photos you can contact me or go to the Tachikawa Air Base site at Yahoo in the groups section. we have over 800 group members, people that were at tachi from 1946 to 1977 when the base was closed down. my email addres is mskids001@aol.com My father was stationed at Tachi from 1958-62 as editor of the base newspaper and then again from 1967 to 1970 as base wing HQ as Historian and i graduated from Yamato High School in 1969.
I lived on Tachikawa from around 73-76. I was married to a guy in the AF. Of course, like everyone else, we commuted between Tachikawa and Yokota.
I became good friends with a woman in the AF, named Mary Torres. She married an African American guy whose name I think is George House. They stayed together only a short time, I think.
The last I know about Mary is that she transferred to Vandenburg AFB. I lost track of her in the early 80's I would love to reconnect with her. Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Sue
